Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education & Citizenship at Bank View

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) and Citizenship are taught at Bank View School to all year. Accreditation that explicitly develops skills for learning, employment and for life are offered.

WELCOME TO THE BANK VIEW HIGH SCHOOL PSHEE AND CITIZENSHIP DEPARTMENT.

Key skills of PSHEe are taught across the school, for example assemblies, specialist outside agency workshops, other curriculum areas and as a discrete subject.
At Key Stage 4 pupils work on Open award units which form part of a qualification in Preparing for College and Employment
At Bank View School we offer opportunities to develop and promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Pupils are encouraged to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in outdoor and community activities. Age appropriate Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is taught as an integral part of the PSHEe programme at all key stages. This is taught by school staff and outside agencies.

Key Stage 3
In Key stage 3 pupils follow the PSHE Association recommended Programme of Study and scheme of work interspersed with current events, topical issues and celebrations i.e. Diversity week, Fair Trade Fortnight, Refugee Week, elections and charity fund raising events . The overarching concepts of identity, relationships, healthy lifestyles and risk, diversity and equality, rights and responsibilities, resilience and change, power and careers are fostered at this stage in order to facilitate a smooth transition to key stage 4 where they are revisited and further developed through the accredited courses.

Key Stage 4
In Key stage 4, pupils learn to embrace change, feel positive about whom they are and enjoy healthy, safe and responsible lives whilst developing as questioning, informed consumers who can manage their own money and finances effectively. This is achieved through challenges in personal and economic wellbeing, social, health and ethical skills.
RSE is taught through a planned programme of informative and experiential lessons, some of which are delivered on a seminar/workshop basis by outside agencies which specialise in sexual health information and education for young people. Workshops and discussions are also undertaken to support parents in this subject.
The Citizenship course is designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in public life by encouraging them to participate actively in the life of their school, neighbourhoods, communities and wider society as an active citizen.
