Zones of regulation

Zones of regulation

The Zones of Regulation is a systematic framework designed to help individuals, especially children, understand and manage their emotions, sensory needs, and self-regulation skills. These are promoted across Bank View.

Self-regulatory skills can be defined as the ability of our pupils to manage their own behaviour and aspects of their learning.

Using the zones of regulation encourages tour pupils to become more aware of their emotions and gain a better understanding of what coping strategies support each zone. Developing emotional regulation can help reduce operational stress leading to better academic performance in school.

We work together so our pupils

  • Recognise when they are in the different Zones and learn how to change or stay in the zone they are in.
  • Increase their emotional vocabulary so they can explain how they are feeling.
  • Understand that emotions, sensory experiences such as lack of sleep or hunger and their environment might influence which zone, they are in.
  • Identify a range of calming and alerting strategies that support them (personal toolkit)

The different emotional states are assigned to four distinct zones; Red, Yellow, Green and Blue.
The Red Zone represents heightened emotional states such as anger and frustration.
The Yellow Zone represents emotions such as anxiety.
The Green represents calmness, happiness, and the Blue Zone symbolizes sadness.

Each classroom has a Zones of regulation display with a toolbox of suggestions.
Individual strategies to support, produced with the pupils and their form team, are shared with all staff.
